Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that:

any Family Violence Intervention Orders (or variations/extensions, and certain recognised domestic violence orders from other jurisdictions) made between 15 November 2024 and the date the law comes into force, and served on or after 15 November 2024, will be treated as having been properly served even if the printed copy of the order had a missing phrase (“the Court orders that the respondent must not”) due to a printing error.

respondents to such orders during that period will be held liable for contravening the order from the time it was (correctly or purportedly) served, despite the defect in the copy.

the previous printing error will be retroactively fixed (as far as the law is concerned) so that affected orders are “deemed” to have always been valid copies of the Court’s order.
