Effects of Bill:
This bill being passed means that:
Victoria’s own criminal wage theft offences and associated investigation powers under the Wage Theft Act 2020 will be repealed, because equivalent offences now exist at the Commonwealth level.
The Wage Inspectorate Victoria will be renamed as the Workforce Inspectorate Victoria, and the Wage Theft Act 2020 will be retitled as the Workforce Inspectorate Victoria Act 2025.
Workforce Inspectorate Victoria will retain its independent statutory status and continue overseeing workplace laws such as the Child Employment Act 2003, Long Service Leave Act 2018, Owner Drivers and Forestry Contractors Act 2005, and its role as regulator under the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005
Workforce Inspectorate Victoria will be given a new facilitative role—specifically, the ability to provide advice and information about workplace entitlements, as prescribed
Workforce Inspectorate Victoria will be empowered to receive complaints or information regarding improper conduct at public construction projects and refer them to the appropriate government or law enforcement bodies; it can also request updates and report to the Minister
