Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that:

the trustee-secret commission offence in section?180 of the Crimes Act?1958 will be narrowed to apply only when someone acts with dishonest or corrupt intent, rather than covering well-meaning transactions.

the commencement of summary appeal reforms—shifting away from full retrials in County Court for Magistrates’ Court convictions—will be postponed by three years, to 21 July 2028.

the Magistrates’ Court’s electronic Case Management System (CMS) will be expanded to include criminal matters, improving digital access and procedural efficiency.

technical and drafting errors in the Worker Screening Act?2020 will be corrected, improving the integrity of that law.

an outdated provision (section?330G(2)(a)) of the Social Services Regulation Act?2021 will be repealed, removing an unintended exclusion affecting out-of-home carers.

an obsolete regulation-making power in the Magistrates’ Court Act?1989 will be repealed, streamlining legislative authority.

citizenship or permanent residency eligibility requirements will be clarified for appointments as Chief Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and acting roles under the Victoria Police Act?2013.
