Slight Increase in Nurse to Patient Ratios, Additional Ward Nursing Supervisors and Reclassification of Warrnambool Hospital
Safe Patient Care (Nurse to Patient and Midwife to Patient Ratios) Amendment Bill 2020
1st House
2nd House
Law
Effects of Bill:
This bill being passed means that:
Warrnambool Base Hospital will be upgraded from level 3 to level 2 hospital, which will mean improved medical and surgical ward ratios;
All hospital classifications are to be reviewed
In level 1 (busiest/major) hospitals, an extra nurse will be added to night shift on some wards
Birthing Suite afternoon and night shifts will be required to have one more midwife on shift
In residential aged care and rehab wards, ratios could in the past be rounded down (e.g. if 4.3 nurses were required, they only needed 4 in practice). They will now be always rounded up (i.e. if the maths works out to needing 4.3 nurses, they need 5 to cover off requirements).
In many level 4 (i.e. small, regional) hospitals, an extra senior nurse will be required for after-hours shifts
