Consumer Legislation Amendment Bill 2019

1st House

2nd House

Law

This Bill was sponsored by Marlene Kairouz ( ALP )

This Bill was sponsored by Adem Somyurek ( IND )

Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that:

Consumer Affairs Victoria can now request documents and investigate unfair contract terms on behalf of consumers;

Domestic Building Dispute Resolution is streamlined a bit

Rental Tenancies law regulating the way landlords and tenants relate (e.g. inspections etc) is now specifically not applicable to DHHS renting social housing to agencies, and to the Shared Housing Scheme (which is where home buyers jointly buy a house with the government and then pay rent on the governments share)

Landlords and tenants can enter an agreement to jointly repay a loan for installation of solar, with the tenant paying up to 50% of the cost

Federally registered charities no longer need to separately register with Consumer Affairs Victoria to conduct a fundraiser in Victoria

New rules supporting renting with pets which were passed in 2018 will now come into effect earlier than 2020 as they have been positively received

Individual sex workers are required to register as exempt from needing a licence; this register is not publicly available for privacy reasons
