Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that:

school or preschool leaders (like principals or directors) can tell someone to leave immediately and not come back for two business days instead of 48 hours.

these leaders can issue a barring notice that stops someone from entering the school, communicating with staff (including via phone, email, or social media), or even going near the school—now including areas up to 25 metres from the boundary.

the time someone can be barred increases from 3 months to 6 months.

the maximum penalty for breaking a barring order goes up from $2,500 to $7,500.

these changes apply across public, Catholic, and independent schools, as well as preschools and other approved education services.

it protects against new types of bad behaviour—like vexatious communication (unwanted or repeated messages online or offline), threats, or disturbance at camps, excursions, or just outside school gates.

children’s attendance isn’t affected—parents who are barred can still drop off or pick up their child under safe conditions and communicate through designated staff.
