Effects of Bill:
This bill being passed means that:
Details of de facto relationships will be included on birth and death certificates
When registering a birth, details of previous children from either or both registered parents (such as half-siblings) will be collected, rather than only the children of both parents.
The bill ensures that children conceived through assisted reproductive technologies by sole parents are recognised. Information about the family structure and siblings, whether biological or not, is included in the birth registration.
Previously gender-specific requirements, such as the collection of a mother\'s maiden name are now removed in favour of more gender-neutral terms.
Individuals can now apply for a change in their sex or gender identity on their birth certificate without needing to undergo surgery.
For children under 18, there is now a pathway for parents or guardians to apply for a change in the child's recorded gender, provided that the application is approved by a court. This includes taking into account the child’s ability to understand the process and whether they have received appropriate clinical support.
