Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that:

the Climate Change and Greenhouse Emissions Reduction Act 2007 (SA) will be updated to set new statewide emissions reduction targets.

South Australia’s emissions reduction target will increase from 50% below 2005 levels by 2030 to 75% below 2005 levels by 2035.

a new long-term target will be introduced of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

the Minister will be required to publish annual progress reports on emissions reduction and climate adaptation.

the Act will expand the scope of sector-based climate plans, requiring them for industries such as energy, transport, agriculture, and waste.

the Climate Change Council will have broader advisory functions and greater reporting duties to Parliament.

the government will be empowered to make regulations for carbon offset schemes, renewable energy credits, and other emissions-related mechanisms.
