Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

The Environment Protection Authority must refuse new thermal coal licences from 31 December 2030.
The Environment Protection Authority cannot extend existing thermal coal licences after 31 December 2030.
All authorisations for thermal coal activities end on 31 December 2030.
Mining or exploring for coal is a criminal offence.
Corporations face fines up to 1000 penalty units for illegal coal mining.
The State of Victoria increases its renewable energy target to 100% for 2030.
The State is not liable for any losses caused by these coal bans.
Parliament cannot repeal or change the coal mining ban unless the change increases penalties.
