Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Police can use hand-held scanners without a warrant at licensed premises, transport hubs, shopping centres and sporting venues.
Police can follow a person into a public place to finish a scan.
Senior police officers can authorize scanning in other public places for up to 12 hours.
Police can require a person to produce an object if a scanner detects metal.
Police can search a person without a warrant if they refuse a scan.
The Terrorism (Preventative Detention) Act 2005 stays in force until 16 December 2040.
