Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Courts can now order up to three years of probation for children convicted of 20 additional prescribed offences.
Courts can sentence children to the same maximum detention period as adults for these offences.
Children convicted of offences that carry life sentences for adults face a mandatory 15 year minimum non-parole period.
Courts can no longer use restorative justice orders for these prescribed offences.
Judges can now decide the release date for children in detention for prescribed offences instead of following a mandatory minimum service period.
People on the eligible persons register can nominate someone else to receive detainee information for them.
