Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Police officers can issue a 12-month Police Protection Direction without a court application.
Police must get approval from a separate authorised officer before issuing these directions.
Police cannot issue these directions if the person used a weapon or if a child is involved.
Respondents face up to 3 years in prison for breaking a Police Protection Direction.
The Magistrates Court can force adults with a history of violence to wear electronic monitoring devices.
People are banned from using monitoring device data for any unauthorised purpose.
Magistrates Courts can now use video-recorded evidence for all domestic violence summary and committal proceedings.
