Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Schools must create and use a policy that stops students from using personal electronic devices, including mobile phones, during school hours.
This policy starts on 28 January 2027.
The law now recognises Aboriginal people as First Nations people.
Education bodies must follow principles of Aboriginal self-determination across the education system.
Teachers must complete mandatory professional development training on Aboriginal cultural understanding.
This training starts on 1 August 2027.
The Victorian Institute of Teaching (the body that registers teachers) can now more easily remove old entries from the Register of Disciplinary Action.
The rules for keeping and removing entries on the Register of Disciplinary Action for teachers are updated.
People will be penalised if they falsely claim that a person is or was registered as a teacher.
