Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
People cannot modify e-bikes to travel faster than 6km/h without pedalling; or faster than 25km/h while pedalling.
Riding a modified e-bike is banned.
E-bike riders on footpaths or shared paths must not exceed 10km/h.
Authorities can create a licensing system for e-bike riders on roads; this includes competency tests and education courses.
Authorities can set up a registration system for e-bikes used on roads; this includes taxes, fees and number plates.
Authorities can set e-bike safety standards; they can enter premises to inspect e-bikes for sale.
The Minister for Transport must report yearly to Parliament on e-bike crash deaths and injuries.
