Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Registered medical or nurse practitioners may start a conversation about voluntary assisted dying if it occurs during a discussion about end-of-life care and the patient is informed about palliative care options.
Medical or nurse practitioners who fail to follow the rules for initiating voluntary assisted dying discussions are deemed to have engaged in unprofessional conduct.
People seeking voluntary assisted dying must now appoint a contact person and make a decision on whether they will self-administer the medication or have a practitioner administer it.
Health practitioners who refuse to provide information about voluntary assisted dying due to a conscientious objection must tell the person that other providers may be able to help.
Practitioners with a conscientious objection must provide the person with information approved by the Health Secretary.
