Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

The Hunter New England Local Health District is dissolved
The Hunter Local Health District and the New England North West Local Health District are established
The Health Minister can transfer assets, rights and liabilities to these two new districts
The transfer of assets does not count as a breach of contract; it cannot trigger a default or end a contract
Lessees do not have to formally acknowledge the new landlord
The government will not pay compensation for the transfer of assets
State taxes and registration fees are not payable on the transfer

I introduce the Health Services Amendment (Splitting of the Hunter New England Health District) Bill 2025. The intent of the bill is to create two separate local health districts [LHDs], Hunter and New England North West. This bill has been a long time coming. The idea of splitting the Hunter New England Local Health District was most recently the subject of discussion in 2022 when my parliamentary colleague the former member for Northern Tablelands launched a petition to that effect. It garnered over 16,000 signatures and was debated in Parliament, but it goes back even further than that.
