Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
A person commits an offence if they knowingly display a Nazi or terrorist organisation symbol in public without a reasonable excuse.
Individuals face up to 5 years in prison; they can also be fined up to 200 penalty units.
Companies face fines up to 500 penalty units.
The law excludes symbols used for Buddhism, Hinduism or Jainism.
Displays for academic, artistic or educational purposes are not offences; this also applies to other purposes in the public interest.
Courts must deal with these charges on indictment.
The standard non-parole period for this offence is 1.5 years.
