Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
People cannot contact potential claimants to solicit or refer claims if they expect to be paid for doing so.
People cannot pay others to refer legal claims.
Fines of up to 500 penalty units apply for these offences.
Lawyers who break these rules may face professional misconduct charges.
Law practices convicted of these offences cannot charge legal costs for that claim; they must refund any costs already received.
The Minister must review the Act after two years and table a report in Parliament.
