Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Amalgamated councils can submit a business case to request a de-amalgamation referendum.
The Minister for Local Government must send these business cases to the Boundaries Commission for a report.
The Minister must consult with the Electoral Commissioner before approving a referendum.
Amalgamated councils cannot hold a referendum without the Minister's approval.
The Minister can ban councils from selling assets or changing local environmental plans once a referendum is approved.
Electors on the residential roll must vote at the referendum; failure to vote is an offence.
