Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Strangulation offences are now classified as serious violence offences.
Strangulation committed with intent to commit certain sexual offences is now a serious sex offence; this applies if the intended offence carries a prison term of 7 years or more.
The court can apply for extended supervision or continuing detention orders if a person is serving an aggregate or cumulative sentence involving at least one serious or sexual offence.
The Supreme Court can make extended supervision orders against terrorism offenders serving aggregate or cumulative sentences involving at least one NSW indictable offence.
People on a federal recognizance release order are now deemed to be serving a sentence of imprisonment for the duration of that order.
