David Berry Hospital Amendment (Prohibition of Sale) Bill 2024

As I said during the public interest debate, the motion I proposed was exactly the same as the one proposed by the former member opposing the sale of the site, almost 30 years ago to the day, in this very Chamber. David Berry’s 1889 will expressly provided a bequest of £100,000 for the erection and endowment of a hospital. However, governance of the hospital is under the terms of the David Berry Hospital Act 1906, which overrides the will and includes a provision for the Government to sell the site if it not required as a hospital.
