Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Forestry operation approval holders cannot work in areas of regional koala significance.
The ban also applies to any area the Environment Minister declares as koala habitat.
The Environment Minister must declare an area as koala habitat if a qualified ecologist or forestry expert assesses it as such.
The Environment Minister must table these habitat assessments in both Houses of Parliament.

The bill will ensure that forestry operations do not occur in areas of regional koala significance or areas declared by the Minister as koala habitat. The bill will ensure that the Minister declares koala habitat and arranges for the assessment to be tabled in each House of Parliament as soon as practicable, if the Minister receives an assessment by a suitably qualified person.
