Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Organisations and researchers receiving funding from the Australian Research Council must not promote, enable or amplify antisemitism.
The Australian Research Council can cancel funding if an organisation or researcher promotes, enables or amplify antisemitism. Existing funding approvals will be automatically cancelled after six months unless they are updated to include this requirement.
People cannot apply for Australian Research Council funding if the application relates to an organisation or project that promotes, enables or amplify antisemitism.
The Australian Research Council Board must create rules to ensure funding is not used to promote, enable or amplify antisemitism.
Registered higher education providers must use the legal definition of antisemitism for all purposes. They must also prevent, combat and respond to antisemitism as a condition of their registration.
Registered higher education providers must take specific steps to stop antisemitism. This includes rejecting antisemitism publicly, ensuring campus security for Jewish people, removing antisemitic content from teaching materials, and stopping boycotts of Jewish or Israeli academics and institutions.
The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency must create standards to check if higher education providers are meeting their obligations to combat antisemitism.
