Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

People are banned from supplying defence technology, goods, or services if there is a real risk they will help commit a serious violation of international law.
People are banned from taking part in, or paying others to take part in, practices that may contribute to genocide.
The Australian Anti-Genocide Commissioner can order companies to sell off investments, end agreements, or stop certain activities to fix genocide-related risks.
The Minister can order a person to provide information and documents within 28 days. A person cannot refuse to provide this information by claiming it would incriminate them.
People who intentionally or recklessly supply banned defence goods or contribute to genocide risks face up to 30 years jail or a fine of 1 million penalty units, or both.
People who intentionally or recklessly ignore the Minister's information requests or the Commissioner's orders face up to 5 years jail or a fine of 200,000 penalty units, or both.
People who export goods in breach of a Defence Minister's notice face up to 10 years jail or a fine of 25,000 penalty units, or both.
People who accidentally break these rules because they were not careful can be fined up to 100,000 penalty units.
