Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Courts must presume imprisonment for people committing specific firearms offences.
People cannot acquire a firearm unless they are a licensed dealer; hold the correct licence and permit; or hold an antique firearm permit for a registered antique firearm.
People cannot lend a firearm unless they verify the borrower has a valid licence; they must also ensure the borrower can meet storage requirements if the loan lasts longer than 24 hours.
People who lend firearms must tell police the firearm's location and the borrower's name when asked.
Firearms licences are restricted to Australian citizens; New Zealand citizens; or permanent residents with a specific genuine reason.
People cannot sell, acquire, or possess an antique firearm unless it is registered.
Antique firearm registrants cannot possess ammunition for that firearm unless they hold a separate firearms licence.
Antique firearm permit applicants must live in Tasmania; be at least 18; and not be a serial family violence perpetrator from the last 5 years.
