Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Issuing officers can now grant warrants to search or frisk people under 14 years old; they must consider the child's best interests before deciding.
Police officers are generally banned from stopping, searching or detaining children under 14; they must follow specific new rules to do so.
Police can stop or detain a child under 14 if they believe the child is at least 14; they can also do so to prevent serious harm or ensure the child's safety.
Police can stop or detain a child under 14 if they believe the child has evidence related to a crime committed by someone else.
Police must not detain a child under 14 longer than necessary to check their age or stop harmful conduct.
Police can keep a child under 14 in detention until they can be handed over to a parent or a responsible carer.
Issuing officers can now grant warrants or allow emergency entry to premises to prevent physical injury to a person; previously this only applied to preventing an offence.
