Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

People cannot teach in an educational setting unless they hold a valid VET registration, an alternative authorisation to teach (AAT), or specific early childhood qualifications.
The Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania can force a person to pay for a medical or psychiatric exam to determine if they are fit to teach.
The Board can suspend or cancel a teacher's registration without an inquiry if they fail to pay fees or lack required registration.
The Board must immediately suspend a teacher or AAT holder if they are charged with a relevant offence; they may also do so if the person poses a risk of harm to a learner or used fraud to get registered.
Registered teachers and AAT holders must follow the specific terms and conditions of their registration; breaking these rules carries a fine of up to 200 penalty units.
Teachers must notify the Board within 14 days of any changes to their personal details on the Register; failure to do so carries a fine of up to 10 penalty units.
Employers must notify the Board within 14 days if a teacher's place of employment changes; failure to do so carries a fine of up to 5 penalty units.
