Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Parent entities of service groups must pay a news media bargaining charge if they provide significant social media or search services.
Parent entities can reduce their charge through an offset if they spend money with at least eight different news business corporate groups.
The Commissioner of Taxation can negate charge benefits obtained through tax-avoidance schemes; the Commissioner can treat events as having or not having happened to calculate the correct charge.
The law applies to activities occurring outside Australia.
The Treasurer must conduct an independent review of the bargaining charge system after three years; this review must include public consultation.
