Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Amendment (Knife Scanning) Bill 2026

The bill implements in full the recommendations of part 4A of the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act [LEPRA] 2002, which provides powers for police to scan a person with a handheld metal scanner, colloquially known as knife wanding. The statutory review, conducted by the Department of Communities and Justice in consultation with the NSW Police Force, makes seven important recommendations to improve the operation and transparency of the scheme. The report from the statutory review was tabled on the 23 June 2026.
