Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

The Minister must appoint a Judge to lead a Commission of inquiry into antisemitism at Australian universities.
The Commissioner can use the same powers as a Royal Commission; this includes the power to compel witnesses to appear.
Department employees can share personal information with the Commission; this disclosure is legally authorised.
The Commissioner must investigate antisemitic activity on campuses; this includes harassment, violence, and support for terrorist groups.
The inquiry must check if university leaders and regulators did enough to protect Jewish students and staff.
The Commissioner must examine if universities have adequate policies, security, and disciplinary procedures to handle antisemitism.
The Commissioner will recommend if the government needs new laws or intervention powers to stop antisemitism.
The Crown cannot be prosecuted for offences under the Royal Commissions Act.
