Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Courts must imprison offenders who cause physical harm under section 188A of the Criminal Code; this applies if the offender has a prior violent conviction.
Courts must impose a minimum three-month prison sentence for specific offences under section 189A of the Criminal Code.
Courts must issue a community correction order for section 188A or 189A offences if the court does not impose a prison sentence.
These mandatory sentencing rules apply only to offences committed after the law starts.
The old version of section 78DA still applies to offences committed before the law starts.
