Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
A person commits an offence if they drink liquor in a public place or vehicle and cause a nuisance to others.
The offence is one of strict liability; the person is responsible regardless of intent.
The maximum penalty is 5 penalty units.
A person is not guilty if the owner or occupier of the public place gave permission to drink there.
Authorities can issue infringement notices for this offence.
The fine for an infringement notice is 1 penalty unit.
People can be fined up to 5 penalty units for drinking alcohol in a public place or vehicle if they cause a nuisance to others.
This fine does not apply if the owner or occupier of the public place gave permission to drink there.
Police can now issue an infringement notice with a 1 penalty unit fine for this offence.
