Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Senior Sergeants or higher can authorise the use of handheld scanners in specific areas; this includes public transport vehicles and facilities.
Police can require people to be scanned without a warrant if an authority is in effect for that area.
Police can scan people in schools if an authority is in effect; they must first get consent from the principal or an authorised employee.
Police can continue scanning a person on a public transport vehicle even if the vehicle leaves the authorised area or route.
Police are banned from using handheld scanners on people in private vehicles.
The authorised scanning area must be no larger than necessary to detect or deter weapon offences.
