Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
Courts must not grant bail to people accused of section 7A offences; the person must prove why bail should be granted.
Community safety is the most important factor when deciding bail for section 7A offences.
Courts must have a high degree of confidence that a person will not commit a serious violence offence or endanger the community before granting bail.
Courts must consider the risk to community safety during all bail applications.
Courts can no longer use certain criteria when deciding bail for youths.
Bail granted by the Local Court does not automatically continue if the person appears before the Supreme Court.
