Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
A person commits a crime if they help a member of a terrorist organisation enter Australia.
The crime also applies if the person knows the traveller intends to commit a terrorism offence.
The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison.
The law does not apply if the person has written permission from both the Foreign Affairs Minister and the Home Affairs Minister.
The person is strictly liable for whether they acted on behalf of a Commonwealth authority.
Two existing sunset dates in the Criminal Code are pushed back to 7 September 2030.
