Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

26 January is the official date for Australia Day.
26 January ceases to be Australia Day if voters choose a new date in a referendum.
A majority of voters across every State and Territory must select a new date to trigger the change.
Parliament determines how proposals for a new date are presented.
Parliament sets the voting method; this may include preferential voting if three or more dates are proposed.
