Effects of this bill
If this bill passes, it means that:
The law validates the use of student tax file numbers by VET loan officials between 1 January 2017 and 1 October 2025.
These dealings are now treated as if they were always legal; this applies even if they were previously unauthorised.
The VET Student Loans Act 2016 is now classified as a taxation law for specific privacy and administration rules.
Any other actions taken under the VET loan system are now considered valid and lawful.
The Commonwealth must pay reasonable compensation if these changes result in the unfair acquisition of a person's property.
