Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Authorised nurse prescribers can write prescriptions for pharmaceutical benefits from 1 July 2026; the medicine must be for the nursing treatment of the patient.
The Minister determines the qualifications and experience needed to be an eligible nurse prescriber.
Eligible nurses can apply to the Secretary to become authorised nurse prescribers.
The Secretary can suspend or revoke a nurse's approval if they breach conditions or no longer meet eligibility criteria.
The Secretary must give a nurse 28 days to make written submissions before suspending or revoking their approval.
Nurses can ask the Secretary to reconsider a decision to refuse, suspend, or revoke their approval.
Courts can suspend a nurse's approval or their authority to supply pharmaceutical benefits during legal proceedings.
