Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Non-publication directions from the Defence and Veterans’ Service Commissioner no longer block public access to records under the Archives Act 1983.
IGIS officials can share information or documents with entrusted persons; the Inspector-General must be satisfied that the Commissioner can protect the data.
Existing non-publication directions and search warrants remain valid under the new law.
Notices to attend hearings or produce documents issued under the old law stay in effect.
Prior actions taken by the Commission or Commissioner are validated under the new Act.
Ongoing requests from the Minister for research or advice continue under the new framework.
