Effects of this bill

If this bill passes, it means that:

Consorting restrictions now apply to people who commit child sex offences; this is in addition to indictable offences.
These restrictions apply to child sex offences committed outside Western Australia; this includes offences committed outside Australia.
The law now includes child sex offences when determining if a person is restricted from associating with others.

“I move: That the bill be now read a second time. The Capturing Child Sex Offenders for Unlawful Consorting Bill 2026 amends the Criminal Law (Unlawful Consorting and Prohibited Insignia) Act 2021. The act’s purpose is to disrupt serious and organised crime. This bill closes an identified gap in the act by expressly extending the unlawful consorting scheme to include child sex offences.”

What we need is some humility from the Cook Labor government, some acknowledgement that this is a problem. And ideally support for the opposition’s bill, or alternatively, an expedited passage of their own legislation.
