Effects of Bill:

This bill being passed means that... The Victorian Essential Services Commission will determine a Default Offer which includes a per-kWh rate as well as a daily service charge and must be provided by all private companies providing gas and electricity. If a home or small business finishes their energy contract and continues to use electricity or gas at whatever the company sees fit to charge, or otherwise is on a standing contract, as of 1 July 2019 this reverts to the Default Offer not whatever the company previously charged. This will not directly affect consumers on a Market Contract who have shopped around and signed up, unless the market contract is worse than the Default Offer set by the government Essential Services Commission in which case they may ask for the Default Offer.
