This bill being passed means that... The following are banned: Single-use plastic cutlery, straws, stirrers; Polystyrene foam cups, bowls, plates, and clamshells; This list can be added to, or exemptions made, in regulations. Regulation changes must be announced by the Government Minister responsible - on a website, with 8 weeks consultation.
This bill being passed means that... Businesses cannot distribute or sell the banned plastic items specified, unless they're a manufacturer selling or distributing them to someone outside South Australia
This bill being passed means that... Individuals who believed the product they were selling or handing out was not banned can use this as a defence.
This bill being passed means that... Individuals can now be fined $1,000 up to $20,000 for lying to people and saying that specific single-use plastic items ARE NOT banned and then handing them out
This bill being passed means that... Anyone producing oxo-degradable plastic (plastic which breaks down into a million tiny bits in sunlight) can be fined up to $20,000
This bill being passed means that... Manufacturers must certify that plastic products do not contain any oxo-degradable plastics; and people who distribute plastic products (sell or hand out, either one) must be able to show manufacturer certification that the product does not include any oxo-degradable plastics. The penalty for not being able to do this without reasonable excuse is up to $20,000
This bill being passed means that... Anyone who falsely says, before or in the process of selling a product, that it is not made of oxo-degradable plastic - when in fact it IS - will be liable to a fine of up to $30,000.
This bill being passed means that... The minister can exempt the manufacture, sale and supply of plastic straws to people who have a disability and need them
